Discount Dental Hygiene Begins with Safe Teething

It may seem like newborns have no teeth at all, but those pearly whites are already developing beneath the gums. Discount dental care early in life can help prevent oral disease later on, both by developing good habits and by maintaining the quality of their teeth.

Teething

They begin to erupt at six months, and typically the child will have a full set of primary teeth by age 3. Babies often become fussy and may lose their appetite as they endure the initial teething process. Parents can take several steps to ease the discomfort of their child during this time.

  • To sooth tender gums, parents can gently rub the gum line with a clean finger or a cool, damp cloth. Many stores sell discount teething rings for babies to chew on, some of which can be placed in the refrigerator or freezer and given to the child to cool or numb the mouth. Some dentists recommend a topical gel to gently numb the area.

  • Children should not be exposed to toothpaste until they are about 2 years old, because some ingredients may be harmful if swallowed. In the meantime, however, parents may want to gently brush the baby’s teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and some water.

  • Just like a conscientious parent must take action, there are also times to leave things alone for the good of your infant child. For example, eruption cysts, watery sacs that develop when teething, are usually harmless. They will eventually erupt as the tooth emerges from the gum line.

(If your baby develops a fever or has continual diarrhea during this traumatic time, don’t hesitate to phone your physician.)

Establish Good Habits

Parents may want to emphasize the importance of oral health from an early age to establish good habits in their children. Leading by example is an important aspect of this, because children learn from their parents. This is also important because oral decay can spread between people in close contact. A discount plan for the family can help reduce the cost and promote consistent care.

Sometime between the eruption of the first tooth and the child’s first birthday, he or she should be taken to the dentist for a discount dental checkup. Regular appointments every six months to a year can help ensure a healthy, happy smile for years to come.
